Excerpts from Criticism of '3D Sex and Zen' spawns YouTube hit (SCMP; paywall)

A letter criticising the soft porn film 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy as too violent and not sexy enough has gone viral, attracting more than 1.1 million views on YouTube, thanks to movie star Chapman To Man-chak.

The criticism was originally posted by an anonymous writer on an internet forum. But it quickly gained notoriety after To recorded himself reading from the 1,000-word letter. The recording was uploaded on YouTube a week ago.

To then apologised to the hit movie's executive producer, Stephen Shiu Yeuk-yuen, on Chinese networking site Weibo, saying the recording was a reckless act which might have offended some people.

The unnamed letter writer apparently voiced what has dissatisfied many movie viewers, despite the film's popularity.

"Why is the 3-D part in a 3-D porn [movie] nothing to do with sex? It's more about bullets, flying knives, rocks, blood, organs. If I wanted to see flying bullets, I would rather watch [action-comedy movie] Let the Bullets Fly. It's really scary. I curled up when I watched it."

The writer also complained about how actress Vonnie Lui Hoi-yan, who plays a hermaphrodite in the 3-D film, was blown to pieces in the end.

"So now whenever I see Lui's pictures, I will unintentionally think of her speaking with a man's voice, and exploding into pieces. This has a great psychological impact on me."

I haven't seen it, but a porn movie with loads of violence and not enough sex? Is that a specific fetish?

And a hermaphrodite? Wow, Hongkers not so conservative after all?

I hope he gets some therapy every time he sees a pic of Vonnie! In fact, he will either need to be isolated or in therapy 24/7.

BTW, what has been the public reaction to the movie? Are there riots and burnt cinemas?

  2. The fetish or genre is called Hong Kong movies. Lol! If I had to generalize Hong Kong thrillers, I would say your description of loads of violence and a rather immature view of sex is correct. Hong Kong movies are nothing special. But I will say that the main contribution HK movies has given to mainstream movies (i.e. Hollywood) is the amazing wire work that is now so common in blockbuster action movies and martial arts movies.

I have not seen this particular movie (3D Sex and Zen), nor do I feel compelled to watch it. Nowadays, I would have to be pretty desperate to watch Hong Kong movies.

Aside from the fact that this movie has grossed a lot of money locally for a local production, there has not been many reports about public reactions to it. Naturally it was hyped up during its release, due to the sex theme of the movie, but it turned out to be nothing special. I'd say it's a typical local movie in that it doesn't appear to make much sense and has some bizarre scenes. Which is probably why it is doing well locally, but for an overseas audience it probably did not, er, move the earth.

Oh dear, if you're going to make pr0n, you may as well make sure there's plenty of sex. Otherwise, what's the point?

It's like making a murder mystery with no dead bodies, or a horror movie with only flowers and sunshine.

If you're going to make pr0n (and any other kind of movie), make it properly!

  6. I agree AW, but we are talking Hong Kong movies here. Sex scenes in Hong Kong movies have always seemed odd, obviously forced and odious. Take a look at this pic of Maggie Cheung and Andy Lau on Joyce's blog. Although that was filmed in 1988, love scenes in Hong Kong movies have not improved. There is always an awkwardness and robotic-ness present.

Following on from your stance; if you're going to make ghost stories, make them properly. Have you seen Chinese ghost stories? Hilarious. Even though the supernatural is just a figment of our fears, insecurity and imagination, if I was to ever encounter seeing a "Chinese ghost", I'd think I'd burst out in a fit of giggles rather than burst out in my pants!!!

I obviously haven't watched enough Hongky movies with sex scenes!

The few Hongky movies with ghosts in them that I remember watching, were, relatively, not scary, and, you're right, sometimes unintentionally funny. Since I am not a fan of scary movies, this actually suite me well!
