Climate Sceptic Wyss Yim
Good letter from Professor Johnny Chan ... putting Professor Wyss Yim in his place
Professor Wyss Yim's letter published on January 29 ("Hottest year? Not in Hong Kong") argued that urbanisation is the culprit of all the warming that is observed, and that the global temperature actually decreased during the period from 1998 to 2014.
This is typical of climate sceptics who often cherry-pick data to argue that the globe is not warming.
If urbanisation were the only reason for the observed warming, why has the Arctic sea ice shrunk by about a third since 1980? Why have significant amounts of ice melted in many of the glaciers? Why has the ocean temperature continued to increase? In these places, very few people live, and surely no urbanisation exists.
Yes, urbanisation enhances warming in the cities but the increase in temperature is global and not confined to the cities. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, the weather authority within the United Nations, the average temperature over land and ocean in 2014 was 0.57 degrees Celsius above the 1961-1990 average.
Note that the average over land includes all temperature records and not only those in the cities. Just because the temperature in Hong Kong is not the hottest does not imply global warming is not occurring!
As to the "pause" in the warming, the climate system is very complex and the global temperature will always be affected by many factors that occur on relatively short time scales.
Yes, there was short-term downward trend in temperature during the period from 1998 to 2013, but this also happened in the 1970s. And, yet, after the brief downturn, the temperature rose again.
What we are talking about here is a long-term trend and not a short-term one. While there might be periods during which the global temperature decreases, it is still increasing if you examine the record for a longer period of time.
I think the climate sceptics should not cherry-pick data to argue that human-induced global warming is not occurring. There is overwhelming evidence that their argument is invalid.
If we continue to say that human activity has nothing to do with the observed increase in temperature, and therefore nothing needs to be done to reduce our greenhouse emissions, our earth as we know it will be doomed.
Of course, most of us reading this letter will be dead by the time this happens, but is it fair to do this to our future generations?

This is an example of a "cherry picker"; someone who cannot think critically and has fallen into the trap of confirmation bias and wishful thinking. Dorian Ho—who incidentally probably thinks of himself as handsome and youthful-looking—has rejected one stupid "prophecy" for another one. How absurd.

Everyone has been talking about the end of the world lately, because of some ancient prophecy for 2012. I had someone asking me what I would do if this New Year's Eve was my last. I'm not buying into that story since my fortune-teller told me I'd live to be 83 years old. I sincerely wish for world peace this coming year. Let's keep things positive. On a personal note, I'm hoping to make it to Rome early in the year to catch up with some old friends. But with the autumn collection design in full swing and New York fashion week coming up, I don't know if I'll be able to fulfil that resolution.

Searching for a Silver Lining in the Manila Massacre
The partial release of the long-awaited official report from the Philippines government investigating the ‘tragicomedic’ event on 23 August has probably added more fuel to the fire.
A total of 23 pages of “conclusions on accountability” were omitted from the 84-page report, which has taken a month to complete. Here are the headlines of some local news articles:
Is there a silver lining to all this? There doesn’t appear to be, although it is somewhat surprising that no Chinese media or even individuals have mentioned the really super “lucky” numbers that are associated with the Manila hostage crisis.
Remember, Chinese protestors will not fail to use slogans such as “six-four” (6/4) to represent the June 4th Tiananamenincident massacre or “four-four” (4/4) for the April 4th movement. Anything that enhances Chinese traditions and superstitions will be unashamedly exploited. Fung Shui masters are especially adept at doing this, and the media must also take responsibility for propagating such silly beliefs and superstitions.
But for the Manila ‘tragicomedy’ no one, it seems, has noticed or at least publicly acknowledged the super “lucky” association with “eight-two-three” (8/23) along with the “eight deadly blunders”, not to mention the number of fatalities?
As morose as this post may seem, this is just an illustration of the cherry picking that is involved whenever people use superstition and traditional beliefs to support their cause … as opposed to rationality. We can’t have it both ways: if people choose to use numbers to confirm their biases, then there should be no complaints if conflicting evidence also appears.
This blog makes no apologies when it states that the Manila hostage crisis happened on an extremely auspicious-sounding date, 23 August (8/23), and eight Hong Kong Chinese people were killed. Oh, and the official Philippine investigation report is 84 pages long.

Judges Behaving Bizarrely As Usual
Two court cases reported recently in the local papers highlighted the fact that the guilty parties' links with the well-heeled and well-connected may have helped them receive lenient sentences because of who they are.
In one court case [Police uproar over light sentence for judge's niece], Amina Mariam Bokhary, 34, who is the niece of Court of Final Appeal judge Mr Justice Kemal Bokhary, was convicted of careless driving, failing to take a breath test, and assaulting police (the latter for a third time). Yet magistrate Anthony Yuen Wai-ming put her on probation for a year. She was also fined and banned from driving for a year. Bizarrely, Yuen noted Amina Bokhary's "good background, a well-off family, good education and outstanding academic achievement" ... as if this was influential in his judgment.
In another court case [Businessman's son avoids jail term], Clinton Tong Tsun-tak, 18, who is the son of businessman Carl Tong Ka-wing, vice chairman of listed company eSun Holdings and a director of Crocodile Garments, was convicted of drink-driving, careless driving, driving without a license, taking a conveyance without authority and using a vehicle without third-party insurance.
Magistrate Bina Chainrai sentenced Clinton Tong to 150 hours of community service, along with a fine, and banned from driving for a year. The magistrate also bizarrely noted Tong’s good background and excellent academic results … as if this was influential in his judgment.
Remember, these are two drink-driving cases. And considering the uproar last year about deaths caused by drink-drivers and dangerous drivers—where new enforcement measures and a review of the legislation were implemented—these two drink-driving-related offences have seemingly taken a backward step in the crackdown to drink-driving.

Did the reporters go to the same court hearings?
The Standard reported:
• Amina Mariam Bokhary to be 33 years old.
• Clinton Tong was fined HK$12,000 (US$1,538).
• Clinton Tong’s family paid the injured taxi driver HK$180,000 (US$23,077) as compensation.
The SCMP reported:
• Amina Mariam Bokhary to be 34 years old.
• Clinton Tong was fined HK$15,000 (US$1,923).
• Clinton Tong’s family paid the injured taxi driver HK$288,000 (US$36,923) as compensation.
Note: Whatever the Tongs' compensation amount to the injured taxi driver was, being Hong Kong it simply had to have “eight” in it. The taxi driver must have been quickly sold by that fact alone.
Don’t accept HK$200,000 ... instead “modestly” seize HK$180,000!
Don’t accept HK$300,000 ... instead “humbly” grab HK$288,000!!

The Pot Calling the Kettle Ugly
While scanning the tennis articles about Andy Murray, I saw an article from a British woman bemoaning the fact that not only are British men ugly, but they are the "ugliest and slobbiest in the world". The article is full of generalizations, cherry picking and unqualified statements. It has a notable headline too: Liz Jones Moans.
Here’s what she looks like:
Does the idiom “People who live in glass houses should not throw stones” mean anything anymore?
The comments below the article by readers are pretty damning too. Some examples:
Furthermore, Jones also moans about Kylie Minogue for having the gall to expose “so much bare skin” at this time of year in Paris.

HKSARblog is no fashion guru but is there anything wrong with Kylie’s attire? Is Kylie exposing too much bare skin? First, Kylie is indoors, and not standing outside in the cold Parisian winter. Second, it is reasonable to think that Kylie probably had a coat or she arrived by a chauffeured car (or both). Third, if this is considered “so much bare skin” then Liz Jones seems to suggest that women must wear veils and long drab clothing during winter … oh, and be stylish too.

Chinese Cherry Picking
The following sentence sounds pretty lucky: “Eight [people] work at the "888" noodle shop in the basement of the Cameron Centre in Cameron Road” … until you realize these "lucky eight" were victims who succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Do people (i.e. numerologists, Chinese astrologists, Fung Shui practitioners, and those who believe in such Hocus Pocus) take notice of the “lucky” number eight in such negative situations? Clearly not. It is human nature that people only pay attention to “lucky” numbers that confirm their biases and will usually ignore any incidents that reject their predetermined view.

10 ill after inhaling gas at noodle shop

Ten people at a Japanese-style noodle shop in Tsim Sha Tsui ended up in hospital yesterday when the ventilation system broke, raising carbon monoxide levels to 20 times the standard level.
Eight of the victims work at the "888" noodle shop in the basement of the Cameron Centre in Cameron Road. There was also one customer - a three-year-old boy - and a man who works in a ground-floor shop.
Last night a 27-year-old man was in serious condition in Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the others had been discharged.
Six fire engines, eight ambulances and a mobile casualty treatment centre were dispatched after the restaurant workers complained of inhaling gas and feeling unwell just before 2pm. Most said they felt dizzy or were having difficulty breathing. They were connected to oxygen masks after being carried into ambulances.
Police cordoned off a section of Cameron Road while firemen wearing breathing apparatus and carrying gas detectors were tracing the source of the gas. Shops at ground level were ordered to close until about 6pm.
Workers from the Drainage Services Department were called in to open the covers of nearby manholes to carry out checks. The Fire Services Department said there was a high concentration of carbon monoxide in the restaurant and an initial investigation showed it had been caused by a faulty ventilation system.
Lo Kam-wing, Tsim Sha Tsui fire station commander, said the level of carbon monoxide at one time was 20 times higher than the standard level.
"Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas. Inhaling the gas makes it difficult to breathe and you feel dizzy," he said.
A fire officer said the gas level was raised because there was no fresh air being pumped into the restaurant.
Choi Kin, former president of the Medical Association, said the percentage of carbon monoxide in fresh air was low and it would not have a fatal effect even if the level was 20 times higher than normal. However, inhaling large amounts could cause suffocation and brain damage.

Chinese Fiddlesticks!
Every year, the city’s fate is supposedly sealed by the drawing of a Chinese fortune stick by an official representative of the Hong Kong government. This year, it was fortune stick number 27 that was shaken out of the bamboo holder and immediately the media, not to mention Fung Shui masters, started to cherry pick incidents (i.e. an interesting psychological phenomenon known as confirmation bias) that support the fortune stick’s non-specific predictions.
